The Ruinas complex
Where: Arzana
Duration: half day
Places: nuragic complex
Information: /
Situated at an altitude of 1025 metres, the archaeological site of Ruinas is one of Sardinia’s highest: there’s snow here for a good part of the year and there’s a charming view, as far as the eye can see, over mountainous summits separated by deep gorges and valleys. This place was settled because of the abundance of water, from several natural springs, as well as for its grandeur and the richness of grazing and vegetation. The Nuraghe, composed of a single tower of a circular form and made of granite blocks, was constructed at the highest point.
There is an external courtyard, while the internal structure is circular in shape, of a tholos form, meaning composed of progressively-smaller circles of stones one upon the other, so as to gradually close the roof. The lack of other features, such as internal steps, lead us to think that the Nuraghe di Ruinas was built a very long time ago, in the first phases of the Middle Bronze Age. Around this main building, you find the rest of the Nuraghic village, with about 200 huts.
