F. Caliumi Observatory

The collaboration between A.R.A. (Associazione Reggiana di Astronomia, i.e. the Astronomy Association of Reggio Emilia) and a group of young people from Ogliastra resulted in the early ‘90s, in the building of the only public observatory in Sardinia. Conceived and led by Carlo Desś, the observatory is the result of the synergy amongst the promoting group, A.R.A., the Municipal Administration of Lanusei, the Upland Authority Association, the State Forestry Department and several local institutions in Ogliastra. The local group has then been officially established under the name of Associazione Ogliastrina di Astronomia (i.e. Ogliastra Astronomy Association). The place identified for the building of the observatory is the summit of Mt. Armidda where – at a height of 1,150 metres a.s.l., amongst schist spurs, the astronomical building has been located. This site, which is almost free from light pollution, allows observing without any interference the spectacular sky of Sardinian.
The instrumentation the observatory is supplied with is placed inside a dome which encloses an area of 25 sq m connected to a meeting room of 35 sq m. Other instruments are made available to visitors for observations to be made in the square in front of the observatory. The activity carried out by the Association is mainly intended for popularization. Special consideration is reserved for the groups of students from all over the island who periodically visit the site of Lanusei.
